Ochi Day
You might know that here I write about forgotten people in history but I'm breaking the rule on the first post. Go me! Well, I kinda have to break it because I'm Greek. So on the 28th of October, every single year we Greeks celebrate Ochi Day (which is today). Ochi Day literally means, No day.
So the reason why we celebrate it is because....
Mussolini, the Italian dictator at the time, had asked Greece to surrender without a fight in World War Two, and the Greeks replied with a big NO on the 28th of October, 1940 hence, Ochi Day.
The reason that it's really important, to me at least, is that Greece is a small country and whether its the Romans or the Turks or something else, it feels as if there is always this oppressor and even though Greece is a small country it has always been able to stand up for itself and that takes a lot of courage.
My family in Greece, and the rest of Greece, celebrate Ochi Day every year in Greece. It is a national holiday and there are parades and performances on that day.
So, happy Ochi Day to all of you.
